A Study on the Nurse¡¯s Perception and Performance of Protecting Patient Privacy

Abstract
Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate the nurse¡¯s perception and performance of protecting patient privacy.

Method:The data of this study were collected from 310 nurses of two university hospitals. The data were analyzed by frequency, mean, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient using the SPSS 10.0 for Windows program.

Result:The mean of the nurses¡¯ perception of protecting patient privacy was 4.11. The mean of the nurses¡¯ performance of protecting patient privacy was 3.40. The perception of protecting patient privacy of most nurses was significantly differentiated with the general characteristics of those, but the performances was not. There was a distinct difference between the perception and performance of protecting patient privacy of nurses.

Conclusion:This study suggests the followings: In order to protect the medical informations connected with patients, it is necessary to arrange the medical facilities for patient privacy and make the institutional policies to impose duty of protecting patient privacy upon There is insufficient in the studies on the protecting patient privacy in nursing process, so it is required to make the following studies on the patient privacy.
